Junior High Girl's Basketball
Head Coach: Laury Johnson
Assisstant: Brad Diehl

Tuesday night the JH girls A and B basketball teams played Clinton's Lady Cardinals at home. B team regained their confidence as evident in their level of hustle and court sense. They were much more effective at executing the offense and finishing shots! Cadence Turney gets a shout out, or better yet, '"thumbs up" for stellar effort! Final score was 17-10.
A team made a last minute adjustment to their defense which resulted in several turnovers to our benefit, but our ability to finish layups not so much. The girls were able to draw several fouls from the Lady Cards putting us at the freethrow line for much of the first half. As history has revealed we tend to rush and panic during the second half, and therefore make costly mistakes. The final score was 17-27.
LAST NIGHT (Wednesday), the A team played the Sherwood Lady Marksmen...and BOY DID THEY EVER! The team we knew prior to Thanksgiving Break had returned! Intensity was high, teamwork was evident, and better court sense made the game thrilling to watch. Details aside, the final 3 minutes were packed with action yet we weren't quite able to get ahead by the final buzzer. Final score was 31-33. PROPS girls! Glad you're back! Current record is 5-6...even though we counted last night as a W for us!
B team was allowed only one quarter against Sherwood's B team, but that was all they needed to show their stuff! Even though a final score of 2-0 doesn't sound like much, a win is a win!! Current record is 2-4.
Next week will wrap up the 2019 JH Girls Basketball season. Here's our schedule:
Monday - HOME vs Warsaw (rematch)
Tuesday - AWAY vs. Midway
Thursday - AWAY vs. Adrian (rematch)
Butler Tournament vs. Adrian
Last night BHS hosted round 1 of the Butler JH Basketball Tournament. Your JH Girls played their first match against the El Dorado Lady Bulldogs. While our team had every advantage to perform well, we didn't show up with the spark and energy needed to play basketball. Coach Collins and I have seen this team's ability and potential for playing cohesively, which made it frustrating to watch as one determined ElDo point guard rattled the Lady Bears' cages. Fortunately, we will see the Lady Bulldogs again down the road for a rematch. Final score was 21-28. Current A-team record 5-2.
The girls play a quick Adrian team tonight at 5:00 pm. We would appreciate your support and encouragement to light us up! Show up ready to play BASKETBALL!!
November 21; Butler vs Harrisonville @ home
Last night the JH Lady Bears managed to take one "W" for the team in their contest against Harrisonville.
The B team held strong against Harrisonville's 7th graders up until half time. Unfortunately, the second half turned into a track meet which we were unable to shut down. While the team's intensity continues to improve, we need to strategize on how to continue putting up points for the entire game by controlling the game's pace. Top scorers were Madison Kennedy and Charlotte Rincker, both with 9 points. Final score 19-38. B Team's record is 1-3.
A Team turned it on last night with a 22 point finish over the Harrisonville 8th graders! The girls started strong and continued to dominate throughout all four quarters. Implementation of a press resulted in several turnovers and easy buckets for the Lady Bears. Our defensive game gets stronger each contest as we increase our rebound and turnover percentages. Top scorers were Adyson Clover with 13, Haven Humphrey with 9 and Keera Brockman with 6. Final score was 36-14. A Team's record is 2-1.
The A team will play in the Sherwood Tournament this Saturday. Wish us plenty of hustle!
November 19; Butler vs Archie @ home
The JH Lady Bears challenged Archie last night in which both B and A teams were victorious!
The B team won 4-0 with Charlotte Rincker scoring both field goals. As a team they played more aggressively on defense, were in better rebounding position and are beginning to learn the value of planning and patience while in possession of the ball. Cadence Turney and Summer Lewis get gold stars for "wanting" the ball. Great effort!
The A team won 22-15. Top scorers were Brooke Miller with 7, and Adyson Clover and Haven Humphrey each with 6. As this group continues to polish fundamentals and organize their strategy on the court, they begin to look like the team Coach Collins and I envisioned for the 2019 season.
Thank you to all who came out to support us last night. The crowd was awesome! Girls A & B will play at home Thursday (tomorrow) against Harrisonville.
Hume Tournament (Week of November 5)
The Butler JH Girls Basketball team (B Team) opened their season last night in the first round of the Hume Tournament against Hume's Lady Hornets. The Lady Bears had a slow start against a seasoned Hume offense but began to find their groove on defense during the second half. Rachel Dugan and Summer Lewis hit the boards with a few powerful rebounds each. Top scorers for the game were Charlotte Rincker with 6 points and Miranda Foster with 4. As a team, we learned quickly what worked and that which needs adjustment. In the end, Hume's sharpshooting from the outside overtook the win for round one with a final score of 10-43.
The JH Lady Bears will play again Thursday at 5:00 pm vs the Drexel Lady Bobcats.
Round two of the Hume Junior High Basketball Tournament led to so many improvements for the Butler JH Girls Basketball B-Team against the Drexel Lady Bobcats. Coach Collins and I couldn't be more impressed with this group's ability to turn a major corner in such a short time! With the first game jitters out of the way, the team is increasing intensity on defense, pulling more rebounds and are beginning to create opportunities to score. While the team was not able to advance to the next round, they were able to limit the Lady Bobcats to 21 points. Final score 8-21.
A & B Teams will play their next game Monday, Nov. 11 at HOME against the Nevada Lady Tigers. B Team will play at 5:30 pm, followed by the A Team.
