The class 1 girls golf state championships were Monday and Tuesday in Maryville where Nina Zrubakova and Tarin Schrock competed in some tough conditions.
We arrived Sunday morning for our practice round to a windy and rainy day that eventually turned to sleet. Despite those conditions, the girls got to see the course and did well considering the weather and wearing 4 layers to stay warm! Now it was time to see how they would fair in competition.
Monday started with a 2 hour delay for frost. Tee times were originally scheduled to begin at 8:30. As we drove to the course a little before 10, there was still snow collected on rooftops and cars and the temps were in the 20s. With the delayed start also came slow play. Nina finished up the first round with a 90 (+18) with about 15 minutes until sunset. Tarin was not so fortunate as her group plus 7 other groups did not finish and play was suspended due to darkness. Tarin had 1 hole left. We left the course in the dark unsure of how Tuesday would play out.
We got the notification to be at the course at 8:00 Tuesday morning to be ready to finish round 1. When we arrived we learned that yet again we were under a frost delay until further notice. Round 1 finally resumed around 9:45 and Tarin finished up hole 18 for a round 1 score of 109. We went back to the waiting game as some groups still had 5 holes to finish.
The decision was finally made to begin round 2 which started just before 12:00. They shotgunned the girls as opposed to tee times in hopes of getting finished before dark again.
With roughly 40 minutes to go before sunset, all the girls finished! Nina shot an 86 for round 2 and Tarin a 112.
Overall the girls did great!!! Tarin placed tied for 69th overall. Nina placed 10th and earned All-State honors!!
The girls golf season was our most successful yet. Thanks to everyone for all their support!!
